Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru, 24 years old, died Sunday after falling from the balcony of his home, police said. Police are investigating whether Wanjiru, the first Kenyan to win the gold medal in marathon at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, was pulled deliberately or not from the balcony of his home in Nyahururu, a city located 150 kilometers from the capital, Nairobi.
police chief in the area, Jasper Ombati, said that shortly before falling from the roof of his house, Wanjiru had had an argument with his wife, TRIZ Njeri. Ombati explained that Wanjiru came home with a friend about eleven o'clock at night after a social gathering, and soon became his wife, with whom he had a discussion before the athlete falls from the terrace.
Wanjiru was charged in December 2010 of threatening to kill his wife with an assault rifle AK-47. On that occasion the Kenyan athlete was released on bail and faced a trial held in February this year.
